‘Home is not just a place, it’s a feeling’, is a popular quote. It’s a longing that lingers in us no matter where we are or how long ago it was. We’ve moved on – our children and families are settled across the world, established in their studies, careers and lives. The need for home-like food, foods we enjoy, has also increased. We look back with affection to the days when grandmothers would pickle the vegetable-of-the-season with their unique spices, and it would taste just so right! Or the sweets and huge laddoos they made with hand-pounded flour mixes, fresh jaggery/sugar, pure ghee and so on. The elaborate three-course meals, sumptuous with healthy freshly-thrashed rice, pulses, tamarind, sambhar and rasam masalas remain unparalleled in flavour and taste. Festivals had to be elaborate with keen attention to particular traditional foods and sweets, flowers and new clothes.
